A petition has been launched calling for the term “nurse” to become a protected title after Kate Shemirani from Nottingham was struck off the Nursing Register but continued to describe herself as a nurse. The title “registered nurse” is protected and can only be used by someone on the Register, but “nurse” can be used by anyone, even if they are not qualified. There are concerns that patient safety could be put at risk by unqualified practitioners claiming to be nurses. We hope to see a change in the law to protect the title “nurse” and to reduce the risk to patients.
