Baby Loss Awareness Week 2026 | 9–15 October
Baby Loss Awareness Week is a time to remember the babies who are no longer with us, recognise the profound impact of baby loss on families, and raise awareness of the support available to those navigating grief.
It is also an opportunity to shine a light on the organisations working throughout the year to ensure that no family feels alone in their experience.
One such organisation is the Foundation for Infant Loss, which supports families affected by baby loss and infertility while promoting education, awareness and improvements in professional practice.
Providing support when families need it most
The loss of a baby can be an incredibly isolating experience. Alongside grief, families may face uncertainty, difficult questions and the challenge of finding support that understands their individual circumstances.
There is no single way to experience baby loss, and every family's needs will be different. Some may need bereavement support, while others may be looking for information about their medical care, help navigating services or simply reassurance that they are not alone.
The Foundation for Infant Loss works to help families access trusted support through its national directory and network of healthcare professionals, charities, employers and bereavement services.
By helping families find appropriate resources and support, the Foundation plays an important role in making sure that people affected by baby loss and infertility can access help that recognises their experiences and needs.
More than support: education, awareness and learning
Supporting families is only one part of the wider conversation around baby loss. Education, professional awareness and learning from experiences of maternity and neonatal care are also essential.
Listening to bereaved families matters. Their experiences can highlight questions that need answering, concerns that deserve investigation and opportunities to improve the care provided to future parents and babies.
The Foundation's commitment to education and professional practice reflects the importance of building greater understanding around baby loss and helping ensure that families' experiences are treated with sensitivity and respect.
Baby Loss Awareness Week provides an important reminder that remembrance and support must go hand in hand with a willingness to listen, reflect and learn.
Our partnership with the Foundation for Infant Loss
We are proud to have joined the Foundation for Infant Loss as its exclusive medical negligence legal panel member for Bristol and Bath, Nottinghamshire and Leicester.
As specialists in maternity, birth injury and fatal medical negligence claims, we recognise that some families who have experienced baby loss may have questions about the care they or their baby received.
For those who wish to explore what happened, specialist legal advice can help them understand whether there are grounds for further investigation and what options may be available. This is a personal decision, and not every family will want to pursue legal advice or a claim.
Our role is to listen carefully, explain matters clearly and provide honest, sensitive advice without pressure or judgement.
As part of our partnership, our team will also benefit from specialist clinical training developed by Dr Chantal Fowler Lockey BEM. This includes foetal monitoring, maternity safety, trauma-informed communication and learning arising from national maternity reviews.
We see this as an important opportunity to deepen our understanding of the clinical and emotional circumstances surrounding baby loss, so that we can provide support that is not only legally informed but also compassionate and appropriate to each family's needs.
Listening to families, respecting their choices
At the heart of both the Foundation's work and our partnership is a simple but important principle: families deserve to be heard.
Every family has their own story, their own way of grieving and their own wishes about what happens next. Some may want answers about their medical care; others may focus on remembrance, healing or accessing bereavement support. There should be space for all of these experiences.
As we mark Baby Loss Awareness Week 2026, we are honoured to stand alongside the Foundation for Infant Loss in supporting families, recognising their experiences and contributing to a wider commitment to safer maternity care.
Behind every loss is a lifetime of love, a baby who will never be forgotten, and a family whose story deserves to be treated with compassion and dignity.
