What is Brain Tumour Awareness Month?

Brain Tumour Awareness Month is an annual campaign dedicated to increasing public knowledge about brain tumours, their symptoms, and the need for improved diagnosis and treatment. The aim is for patients, families, healthcare professionals, and advocates to share their experiences and push for advancements in research and care.

With over 12,000 people diagnosed with a brain tumour in the UK each year, the need for awareness has never been greater. Despite medical advancements, brain tumours remain one of the least understood and most underfunded forms of cancer.

Understanding Brain Tumours

A brain tumour is an abnormal growth of cells within the brain, and it can be either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Regardless of type, all brain tumours can have serious effects due to their location in such a delicate and vital organ.

Common Symptoms of a Brain Tumour:

- Persistent headaches that do not go away
- Seizures or sudden convulsions
- Changes in vision, balance, or coordination
- Memory loss or confusion
- Nausea and vomiting
- Speech difficulties

Because brain tumour symptoms can be vague or mimic other conditions, early detection is often delayed, making awareness campaigns like this so important.

The Importance of Early Diagnosis

Early diagnosis can save lives. Unfortunately, misdiagnosis and delayed referrals are common, leading to poorer outcomes for many patients. The more people understand the warning signs, the sooner they can seek medical advice and receive the care they need.

If you or someone you know experiences persistent symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
